Like all tech companies Apple is dealing with major supply chain challenges due to the recent public health crisis. Basically there are too few chips available for the production of new devices which prompts Apple to slash manufacturing goals by 10 million devices. At the very least. Apple’s chip shortage is believed to last well into 2022, but luckily there is a solution if you’re in need of a new iPhone or iPad.
The global chip supply issues put restraints on the mass production of new Apple devices leading up to fewer devices being manufactured and severely delayed deliveries. On its own website Apple reports shipping times of weeks or even months, depending on the model. So your best bet is to frequently check stock of your local retail store. However, in most cases it's already hard to find an iPhone 13 there and the new MacBook Pro (both 14-inch and 16-inch) is reportedly backordered in great numbers.
It is likely for Apple to eventually get the production back up due to its favorable relations with suppliers like Texas Instruments and Broadcom. However, Apple’s chip shortage is still expected to take a while. Things might not get back to normal until the second half of 2022. In the meantime the demand for appliances like phones and laptops continues to grow due to the pandemic which could lead to an even bigger run on new Apple products. Or even worse, raised prices.
If one door closes, another one opens up as is now the case for used iPhones and iPads. Not being bothered by Apple’s chip shortage, they’ve become even better alternatives for when you need to update your devices. Refurbished or used iPhones will last a good while and still pack a punch in terms of speed and performance while being available at a fraction of the price.
Tip: You also might want to think about repairing your old device, because with the recent announcement of Apple Self Service repair costs might soon fall to acceptable heights.
