Remember, remember the 17th of November? It was the day that Apple introduced their new repair program called Apple Self Service. With this program the tech giant grants access to genuine parts, tools and manuals to everyone who is “comfortable” repairing their own devices. Finally Apple lives up to their claims of being a green and environmental friendly business.
Apple’s Self Service repair program allows consumers that want to fix their own devices to order original parts and tools at the new Online Store for Self Service repairs. Your replaced parts can be returned to Apple for recycling which will net you a nice discount on your next purchase. This new repair program is meant for individuals, although it also opens new possibilities for third party repair. However, how this eventually will take shape is still unclear.
It means that now practically everybody can repair iDevices which in theory would greatly reduce costs of extending the lifespan of your beloved iPhone or MacBook. But above all it’s a great win for the planet. Not only does Apple Self Service reduce Apple’s own waste, the fact that a fierce opponent of the right-to-repair movement takes a step in the right direction might also lead to other companies setting up similar programs reducing overall waste.
The program starts early 2022 in the U.S. with over two hundred parts and tools like displays, batteries and cameras for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13. Over the course of a year we will see Apple setting up shop in all other countries over the world and ultimately with even more parts, including components for MacBooks with M1-chips. However, prices aren’t yet announced and we’re also not surprised if certain conditions still have to met before you can order your parts.
